Winter weather brings the best shelling of the year. Hunt eastern murex, the plaid-patterned Scotch bonnet (North Carolina's state shell), and geometrically perfect whelks on wide, empty sand.

This is the heart of an off-season stay: crab off the dock, cook the catch, light a beach fire, and slow all the way down. Plenty of places stay open, some on shorter hours, and the ones that do have no lines.
Light traffic makes Roanoke Island and the northern beaches an easy reach. The NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island and the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills are classic cool-day stops.

The off-season brings the largest rental availability at the best prices on the island. Off-season weeks here start at $500–$850 — a whole cottage on the canal for less than a couple of summer nights.
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse grounds (climbing is closed in 2026), the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum (Tuesday–Saturday), and the Frisco Native American Museum (weekends only from January to the week before Easter). Up the road, the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island and the Wright Brothers National Memorial are open daily except a few holidays.
Yes, but fewer than in summer. Oceana's Bistro in Avon serves lunch and dinner year-round. Many other restaurants close or cut days from December to March, so call ahead.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches are open to walkers all year, and ORV ramps run 24 hours from November 16 to April 30 (a permit is still required). Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge trails are open year-round in daylight, and its visitor center is open daily 9–4.
Grocery stores, led by Food Lion in Avon, are the reliable year-round stops. Gift shops, galleries and surf shops mostly shorten hours or close for part of the winter, so check before you go.
Yes. Many vacation rentals take off-season bookings, usually at the lowest rates of the year. Lucky Landing in Avon rents through the off-season with a two-night minimum.
