Mission #2 · After Dark!

The Ghost Crab Hunt

When the sun goes down, the beach comes alive with ghost crabs — pale, super-speedy little crabs that zip across the sand. Here's how to find them:

Wait for dark
Head to the beach after sunset with a grown-up.
Bring a flashlight
Shine it on the sand near the dunes and watch them scurry!
Look, don't grab
They're fast and shy. Count how many you can spot — but let them be.

They can run up to 10 miles per hour — sideways!
They have one big claw and one small claw
Their eyes are on little stalks and can see all the way around
They dig burrows in the sand up to 4 feet deep
They're called "ghost" crabs because they're pale and seem to vanish!

If the water ever tugs you away from the beach, DON'T fight it. Stay calm, float, wave your arms, and yell for a grown-up!
