OBX resources worth keeping.

The links we actually use — ferry schedules, road closures, rip current forecasts, permits, webcams. Official sources first, no affiliate links on this page, nothing that expires.

OBX is just how people write "Outer Banks" once they've been a few times — it started as an oval car sticker in the 1990s and stuck. If you're headed to the southern end, this is the set of links worth having on your phone before you lose a bar of signal on NC-12.

No affiliate links on this page. These are the official and genuinely useful sources, and they're the same ones we check ourselves.

Before you drive down

NC-12 is the only road on and off Hatteras Island. Check it the morning you travel.

Weather, surf & water

Almost no OBX beach south of Nags Head is lifeguarded. Check before anyone swims.

Text alerts: text OBXBeachConditions to 77295 for real-time beach updates from lifeguards, ocean rescue agencies and the National Weather Service.

Parks, permits & public land

Most of the beach on Hatteras and Ocracoke is federal land managed by the National Park Service.

A quick orientation, north to south

People say "OBX" about a stretch of coast that's over 100 miles end to end, and the northern and southern halves are genuinely different trips.

We're in Avon, midway down Hatteras Island — two stoplights, one grocery store, and about 30 miles of national seashore in either direction.

Common questions

What does OBX stand for?

OBX is shorthand for the Outer Banks, the chain of barrier islands along the North Carolina coast. The abbreviation began as an oval car sticker created in the 1990s and became the everyday local shorthand. It covers roughly Corolla and Duck in the north down through Nags Head, Hatteras Island and Ocracoke in the south.

Is Hatteras Island part of the OBX?

Yes. Hatteras Island is the southern, narrower and quieter stretch of the Outer Banks, running from Rodanthe down through Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. It is connected to the northern Outer Banks by NC Highway 12 and the Basnight Bridge over Oregon Inlet, and to Ocracoke by a free vehicle ferry.

How do you check if NC-12 is open?

DriveNC.gov, run by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, shows live road conditions and closures for NC Highway 12. It is the only road on and off Hatteras Island, and it closes for ocean overwash, flooding and dune breaches, most often near Rodanthe, Buxton and north of Hatteras Village.

Where can I check OBX beach conditions before swimming?

The National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office publishes a daily beach forecast with rip current risk and surf height for the Outer Banks at weather.gov/beach/mhx. You can also text OBXBeachConditions to 77295 for real-time updates from lifeguards, ocean rescue agencies and the National Weather Service.
