Across the inlet

Ocracoke ferry & day trip guide.

Wild ponies, a tidy harbor village, and some of the quietest beaches on the Outer Banks — reachable only by boat. Here's how to get there from Avon, and what's worth doing once you land.

The Ocracoke Express passenger ferry crossing Hatteras Inlet

Two ways to get there

Both ferries leave from the south end of Hatteras Island, about a 30-40 minute drive from Lucky Landing. Which one to take depends on whether you want your car with you.

The free Hatteras-Ocracoke vehicle ferry

🚗 Vehicle ferry — free

Runs first-come, first-served with no reservations, ~52 scheduled departures a day. About every hour off-season (5am–midnight), stepping up to half-hour departures in peak summer.

Crossing: ~60 minutes across Hatteras Inlet, landing at the north end of Ocracoke — a further 12-mile drive down the island to the village.

🚶 Ocracoke Express — passenger only

Seasonal (mid-May through early September), no Sunday service. Carries up to 129 passengers, plus bikes and leashed pets — no vehicles. Lands directly in Ocracoke Village at Silver Lake, skipping the 12-mile drive.

Fare: $7.50 one-way / $15 round-trip per person; kids under 3 free; +$1 for a bike. Reservations recommended, not required.

Which to pick: if you want to explore beyond the village — the beaches, the lighthouse grounds, Springer's Point — bring the car on the free vehicle ferry. If you just want a walkable day in the village itself, the Ocracoke Express saves you the extra drive and the wait in the vehicle queue.

Once you're in Ocracoke Village

🐴 Wild ponies

The famous Ocracoke banker ponies live in a managed pasture near the north end of the island, viewable from a roadside pull-off.

🏮 Ocracoke Lighthouse

The oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina, standing since 1823 — not open for climbing, but a classic photo stop in the heart of the village.

🌊 Springer's Point

A quiet nature preserve with maritime forest trails and a sound-side beach, tied to local Blackbeard legend.

🚋 Free village tram

Hyde County runs a free shuttle looping through the village, stopping at shops, restaurants, and points of interest — handy if you came over on the passenger ferry.
