How many restaurants are in Avon, NC?

Avon has roughly 16 to 17 places to eat, ranging from sit-down seafood restaurants like Oceana's Bistro, The Quarterdeck and Ketch 55 to pizza, tacos, sandwiches, bakeries and coffee shops. It is the best-served village on Hatteras Island for dining, though that still means a modest number of options compared with the northern Outer Banks.

Do Avon restaurants take reservations?

Most do not. Nearly all Avon restaurants are walk-in only, which means a 7pm arrival in peak season often involves a wait. Eating at 5pm is a completely different experience from eating at 7pm at almost every place in the village.

Are Avon NC restaurants open in the off-season?

Some are, but many close entirely or cut to limited days between roughly December and March. Oceana's Bistro has historically stayed open year-round. Always call ahead in the off-season rather than driving over, since hours change with little notice on Hatteras Island.

Where can I get fresh seafood to cook in Avon?

Surf's Up Seafood Market in Avon sells fresh local catch, and Food Lion carries basics. Local restaurants source directly from the Hatteras fishing fleet, so daily specials often feature yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi and soft-shell crab landed that morning.

Where to eat in Avon, NC.

Avon has the most dining options of any Hatteras Island village — which still means about seventeen places, most of them walk-in only. Here's all of them, what they're good for, and how to avoid the 7pm wait.

Before you drive over: hours on Hatteras Island change with the season, the weather and the staffing. Many places close or cut days between December and March. Call first in the off-season. We keep this list current but a phone call beats any website, ours included.

Three things worth knowing before your first dinner here:

Almost nowhere takes reservations. Walk-in only is the norm.
Eat at 5, not 7. In July the same restaurant is a 10-minute wait at five and an hour at seven.
There's now a brewery. Tugs Soundside opened in 2026 — the first on Hatteras Island, and the village's main year-round gathering spot.
The seafood is genuinely local. Restaurants here buy off the Hatteras fleet — the tuna or mahi on the specials board was often landed that morning.

The Mad Crabber

Hatteras Island's original family crab house, going since 1991 — and still the one we send people to first. Steamed crab legs, the Mad Crabber Platter, hand-cut steaks, casual picnic tables, and the kind of room where a table of eight covered in crab shells is exactly the point.

Go if: you want the quintessential Hatteras crab dinner. Bring an appetite and don't wear anything you care about.

Local Hatteras seafood, mermaid-themed and casual. Breakfast (seasonal), lunch and dinner. One of the few that stays open through the winter — the reliable answer in February. Clam chowder, hush puppies and seared tuna get the most repeat mentions.

A long-standing local institution — seafood and steaks, padded booths, full bar. Seafood platters, southern fried chicken, and pies that people specifically drive back for. Old-school in the good way.

Tugs Soundside Taphouse & Brewery

Hatteras Island's first brewery, opened in 2026 in the former Po House space by Travis and Sherry Murray. Right on the Pamlico Sound — which makes it sunset central after a day on the water. Around 20 guest taps of NC and Virginia craft beer plus wine, with their own brewing expected to come online in early 2027.

Live music, music bingo, trivia, arts markets and community seafood boils — it's become the village's year-round gathering spot, which Hatteras genuinely lacked in the off-season.

Took over the space of Nino's Pizza, an Avon institution that ran from 1979 until it closed recently — and kept pizza on the menu, which longtime visitors appreciate.

Cooking at the house instead

Half the appeal of a rental kitchen is not eating out every night, and Avon makes that easy:

Surf's Up Seafood Market — fresh local catch, shrimp, tuna and crab when the boats are in. Cook it the same day.
Food Lion — the island's only chain grocery, with a pharmacy. Avoid Saturday afternoon; that's turnover day and everyone's there at once.
Conner's Supermarket in Buxton — smaller, closer if you're south, and good for basics.
Breeze Thru — mid-week ice, drinks and the thing you forgot. The island's only keg seller.

Eating elsewhere on the island

Avon is central, so nothing is far. Worth the drive:

Frisco (~20 min south) — Gingerbread House Bakery & Pizza has been going 50 years; Hatteras Sno-Balls does ice cream under shaved ice.
Hatteras Village (~30 min south) — Breakwater at Oden's Dock and Dinky's for harbour-view dinners; Sonny's for a proper fisherman's breakfast.
Waves (~25 min north) — Watermen's Bar & Grill and Good Winds, both soundfront with sunset views.
Buxton (~15 min south) — plus the island's only ABC store, if you need it.

A few honest notes

Off-season is thin. December to March, a good portion of this list is closed or on limited days. Oceana's has historically been the year-round constant. Call ahead.
Peak season waits are real. No reservations plus one road plus a full island equals an hour at seven o'clock. Go early or get takeout.
Hurricane and storm closures happen with no notice.
