The main public access, and the one to use if you want facilities: a proper parking lot, restrooms, and outdoor showers for rinsing sand and salt before the car.

Best for: a standard beach day, families, anyone who wants a bathroom within walking distance.

🛣️ Village street ends

Various, through Avon · free

Several streets in the village end at dune walkovers. Limited or no parking at most, so these work best if you're staying close enough to walk or bike.

Best for: guests within walking distance. Don't block driveways or private drives.

🚙 ORV Ramp 38

Just south of Avon · permit required

The closest vehicle ramp to the village. Drive out, set up beside your car, and have shade, a cooler and rods all in one place without carrying anything.

Best for: fishing, long days, families hauling a lot of gear.

🚙 ORV Ramp 34

North of Avon toward Salvo · permit required

One of the nicer accesses on the island — wide beach, and generally less busy than the ramps nearer the Cape.

Best for: getting away from people, sunrise, surf fishing.

Further afield: Ramp 43 and Ramp 44 in Buxton serve Cape Point, about 15-20 minutes south. Those are the ones serious surf anglers use.

Things that catch people out

No lifeguards. Not at the bathhouse access, not anywhere in Avon. The island's one seasonal guarded beach is in Buxton. Read the rip current guide and check the daily forecast.
Stay off the dunes. Use the walkovers. Dune vegetation is what holds this island together and walking on it is both damaging and prohibited.
Seasonal closures move. Sections close for nesting shorebirds and sea turtles, roughly March through August. Posted closures exclude dogs entirely too.
Which side of the island is better changes daily. An east wind makes the ocean beach unpleasant and the sound lovely. See the wind guide.
