Let someone else find the fish

Inshore fishing charters.

A local captain, light tackle, and the shallow, productive waters of the Pamlico Sound — no boat, gear, or local knowledge required.

Inshore vs. offshore

Inshore charters stay in the sound and near the inlets — shorter trips, calmer water, and light tackle aimed at speckled trout, red drum, flounder, and cobia. Offshore charters run out to the Gulf Stream for tuna, mahi, wahoo, and marlin — longer days, rougher water, and a bigger price tag. If you want a strong shot at a real catch without committing to a full offshore day, inshore is the better starting point, especially with kids or first-timers aboard.

What to bring on an inshore charter

The captain brings the rods, reels and bait. Most of what makes a charter comfortable is what you bring aboard, and on the open sound that's mostly sun and water protection.

Common questions

What's the difference between inshore and offshore fishing on Hatteras Island?

Inshore charters stay in the Pamlico Sound and near the inlets, targeting species like speckled trout, red drum, flounder, and cobia on light tackle. Offshore charters run out to the Gulf Stream for pelagic species like tuna, mahi, and marlin — a longer, rougher, more expensive trip.

Is inshore fishing good for families and beginners?

Yes. Inshore and sound charters are generally shorter, calmer, and better suited to kids, beginners, and anyone prone to seasickness than an offshore trip, while still offering a strong chance at a real catch.

Do you need your own fishing license for a charter?

Usually not — most charter captains carry a license covering everyone aboard. Confirm with your specific captain when booking.
