Every fishing guide on the site in one place: where to cast, what runs when, the license you need, and what to do with the fish once it's on the dock.
Avon is one of the great fishing addresses in America — the surf here produced the all-tackle world-record red drum. Here's how and where to fish, from your own dock to the Gulf Stream.
The easiest fishing of your trip is right out the back door. Drop a line or a chicken-neck crab trap off your private dock on the canal — flounder, croaker, blue crabs, and more move through the calm water. Perfect for kids and early-morning coffee. See our step-by-step crabbing guide.
Cast straight into the Atlantic from the beach — the classic Hatteras pursuit. Fall is prime for big red drum. For rigs, gear, and target species by season, see our full surf fishing guide, or the legendary spot on our Cape Point guide.
The Pamlico Sound behind the island is a shallow, productive flat for speckled trout, red drum, flounder, and cobia. Wade, kayak, or fish straight from the dock — see our full sound fishing guide.
The Avon Fishing Pier puts you out over deeper water without a boat — the only pier within the national seashore. See our full pier guide. Pay a daily fee, rent a rod if you need one, and fish alongside the regulars. No personal license needed on the pier (it's covered by their blanket license).
For offshore Gulf Stream action — marlin, tuna, wahoo, mahi — book a charter or the budget-friendly Miss Hatteras head boat out of Hatteras Village, ~15 miles south. No individual license needed; charters carry a blanket license. See the Area Guide for marinas, or our full inshore fishing charter guide for lighter-tackle sound trips closer to home.
Launch straight from the dock and fish the flats for redfish and speckled trout. See our full kayak fishing guide for launch points and gear.
Fresh finger mullet outfish anything from the shop. Learn to throw a cast net — easier than it looks, and the canal is a perfect practice spot.
A completely different kind of fishing day, tucked in the maritime forest and a few neighborhoods. Different license required — see our full freshwater fishing guide.
Anyone 16+ needs a NC Coastal Recreational Fishing License (CRFL) to fish the surf, sound, or off your dock. It comes in 10-day, annual, or lifetime forms.
Exceptions: pier and charter fishing are covered by the operator's blanket license, and kids under 16 are exempt. Buy online or at Frank & Fran's tackle shop in Avon.
