Home / Avon, NC Guide / Avon vs Buxton
The two central villages, honestly compared

Avon vs. Buxton.

The two most-booked villages on Hatteras Island, ten miles apart, and genuinely different trips. We own a house in Avon — and there are real reasons to pick Buxton instead.

Fair warning: we own a rental in Avon, so read this knowing that. We've written it to be genuinely useful anyway — there are trips where Buxton is the better answer, and they're named below.

Avon and Buxton sit about 10 miles apart — 15 to 20 minutes on NC-12. Neither choice locks you out of anything. But they feel different, and one of them probably fits your trip better.

Pick Buxton if…

🎣 Cape Point is the trip

If you're fishing the Point at dawn every day, staying in Buxton saves you 40 minutes of round-trip driving daily. That's the strongest single argument for either village, and it's Buxton's.

🏊 You want a lifeguard

Buxton's beach near the lighthouse is the only seasonally guarded beach on Hatteras Island, staffed Memorial Day through Labor Day. With nervous swimmers or small children, that's a real consideration. (Note: no dogs there in summer.)

🏛️ The lighthouse matters to you

It's in the village. Grounds open 24 hours, and you can walk or bike rather than drive.

🌲 You want trees

Buxton Woods is a 1,000-acre maritime forest — shade, trails, and a genuinely different landscape from the open dunes. Avon has nothing like it.

Pick Avon if…

🛒 You want to drive less overall

Avon is the island's midpoint. The Tri-Villages, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village are all within 15 to 40 minutes. From Buxton, everything north is 15 minutes further.

🍽️ You want options

Around 16 places to eat, the only chain grocery with a pharmacy, hardware, tackle and coffee. On a rainy Tuesday with a full house, that matters more than it sounds. The full list.

🪁 You're here for the wind

Canadian Hole and Kite Point are minutes south of Avon — the best-known kiteboarding and windsurfing water on the East Coast.

🎣 You want a pier

The Avon Pier is the only fishing pier within the national seashore. Fish deep water without a boat, no individual license needed.

The honest summary

If one specific thing is the point of your trip — Cape Point, the lighthouse, a guarded beach — stay next to it. Usually that means Buxton.

If your trip is "a week at the beach with some of everything" — that's Avon. Central, best-served, least driving.

And genuinely: ten miles is nothing. Whichever you choose, you'll see the other one.

If Avon sounds right

We have a canal-front cottage here — two bedrooms, sleeps 8, private dock and kayaks, beach a short walk away.
