Everyday essentials

Groceries, pharmacy & supplies

Avon is the island's commercial hub, so most of what you'll need is a short drive. Stock up on arrival — and remember the island runs on small-town hours.

Food Lion

41934 NC Hwy 12, Avon · Grocery + Pharmacy

The island's only chain supermarket and your main shop — full grocery, deli, beer & wine, and an in-store pharmacy for prescriptions. The most reliable bet for hours.

Conner's Supermarket

Buxton · (252) 995-5711

Family-owned since 1959 — a full-service grocery with fresh meat, produce, organics, gourmet and local products, plus beer & wine. A great Buxton-area stop, "from PBR to caviar."

Dollar General

Avon & Waves

Household goods, snacks, paper products, and forgotten odds-and-ends at low prices. Handy for a quick top-up without a full grocery run.

Hardware & tackle

Avon & Buxton

For tools, fishing gear, beach supplies, propane, and firewood, the island's hardware and tackle shops (and the Breeze Thru general store) have you covered. ⚑ confirm the current Ace Hardware / hardware location & hours

ABC Store (liquor)

Buxton · (252) 995-5532

In North Carolina, spirits and hard liquor are sold only at state ABC stores — and there's just one on Hatteras Island, in Buxton. (Beer & wine are widely available at the grocery stores.)

Beer, wine & bottle shops

Across the island

The famous drive-thru Breeze Thru (MP 55) for beer, wine & the only keg service on the island; plus Cape Cork & Bottle, Hatteras Island's first bottle shop and wine lounge.

Shops at the Ferry Docks (Hatteras Landing)

Hatteras Village, by the Ocracoke ferry

At the south end of the island, Hatteras Landing is a cluster of shops, galleries, and eateries by the ferry terminal — Kitty Hawk Kites, coastal boutiques, gifts, ice cream, and waterfront dining. A pleasant browse while you wait for (or skip) the ferry.

Buxton Village Books

Buxton · in a Civil War-era cottage

A beloved independent bookstore since 1984, set in a vintage island cottage that was floated up the sound and hauled into place. Every room is packed with more titles than you'd expect at the beach — a perfect rainy-afternoon browse.

Rest & recharge

Spas, wellness & me-time

The Outer Banks isn't a big-resort-spa scene — and that's part of the charm — but there are lovely ways to unwind, treat yourself, and enjoy a slower, restorative day on the island.

💆

Massage & spa

Book an in-home or studio massage with a local therapist — many will come to your rental. A perfect post-beach or rainy-day treat.

🧘

Beach yoga

Sunrise yoga on the sand or sound-side sessions appear seasonally around the island — a serene way to start the day.

🎨

Creative & retail therapy

Browse the Kinnakeet clay studio, the art center, and the boutiques in Avon for a relaxed, self-indulgent afternoon.

⚑ Add your local recommendationsList the specific spas, massage therapists, nail/hair salons, yoga instructors, and wellness providers you'd recommend, with contact info. These are very seasonal and provider-dependent on Hatteras, so confirm who's currently operating.
Plan your week

Weather & water temperature by month

Hatteras enjoys around 200 sunny days a year and a mild, water-moderated climate. Wind is a near-daily feature — part of why the island is a watersports legend. Here's roughly what to expect month to month.

MonthAvg air highAvg ocean tempVibe
January52°F~54°FQuiet, brisk, big skies
February54°F~53°FColdest water; oyster-roast season
March58°F~55°FWindy, waking up
April69°F~63°FMild & pleasant; lows in the 50s
May75°F~68°FSwim season begins
June82°F~74°FWarm & lovely
July86°F~80°FPeak summer; warmest water
August85°F~82°FWarmest water of the year
September81°F~80°FThe local secret: warm, uncrowded
October74°F~72°FMild days, prime drum fishing
November66°F~65°FCooling, swimmable early on
December56°F~58°FCozy, festive, quiet

Figures are approximate historical averages (NOAA / satellite sea-surface data) and vary year to year. Comfortable swimming generally runs late April into December, when the ocean stays near or above 68°F.

Warmer than the northern OBX: the Gulf Stream curves closest to land here, so Hatteras water runs warmer than beaches to the north — similar to spots far to the south.
The sound is even warmer: the shallow Pamlico Sound (often just 1–3 ft deep) heats up faster than the ocean — great for little kids, and warmest in mid-summer.
