Lucky Landing sits on a residential canal in Avon with a private dock — not a public marina, not a boat ramp, and not deep water. If your boat is a kayak, a jon boat, or a modest 16–20' skiff, the dock is the whole reason to book this house instead of a dry-lot rental three streets back. If you trailered a deep-V center console, this page is here to talk you out of it before you're stuck in a driveway.

The honest version. This is a house dock on a quiet canal, sized for the boats people actually bring: kayaks, a jon boat, a small skiff or pontoon for the sound. It is not a launch, not a fuel dock, and not staffed. Ask about current conditions before you commit a trailer to the trip.

Will your boat actually fit

Three questions before you hitch up the trailer: draft, beam, and tie-up length. This canal has no bridges to clear, so air draft isn't the issue — depth and width are. We don't publish a canal depth figure we haven't personally measured at a documented low tide, because Hatteras Island canals shoal and change season to season. Ask the host for current depth before you commit a deep-draft boat to the trip.

As a rule of thumb, guests bring kayaks, jon boats, and skiffs in the 16–20' range, plus the occasional small pontoon for a sound cruise. A 28' offshore center console with real draft doesn't belong on a residential canal dock — that boat wants a marina slip in Hatteras Village, not a house dock in Avon.

The no-wake box

Avon's sound-side waters are a designated no-wake zone under 15A NCAC 10F .0310, section 13. The zone runs Pamlico Sound shore-to-shore, bounded by a line off Big Island's east shore to the mainland, includes the cove between North Albacore Lane and South Albacore Lane, and covers Mill Creek, ending at a second line off Big Island's south shore. In plain terms: idle speed in the canals, full stop, and idle speed through the described sound-side cove and creek too.

Hatteras Village, Stumpy Point, and Frisco have their own no-wake sections under the same rule — the boundaries differ by village, so don't assume Avon's box applies anywhere else on the island.

How you get the boat here

Trailering down NC-12 is the only way in — there's no marine highway shortcut to Avon. The Dare County ramp at 23170 Myrna Peters Road in Rodanthe is the closest public boating access point of record on Hatteras Island; it's a two-lane ramp with a floating dock, about 20–25 minutes north of Avon depending on traffic. For a bigger boat, Hatteras Harbor Marina and Teach's Lair Marina in Hatteras Village have slips and services, roughly 20–30 minutes south — call ahead for transient slip availability.

Lucky Landing's dock is not a launch. If you need to put a trailered boat in the water, use the Rodanthe ramp or a marina; use the house dock for tie-up once the boat's already wet.

What the dock is for

Skiff, crab pot, kayak, a cool-down beer at the end of the day. Run out to the sound when the tide and your draft allow, idle through the canal both ways, and treat the water like the shallow, working sound it is — not a ski lake. A jon boat or small skiff can reach open sound water in a few minutes from the dock.

Your trailer boat should already be legal before it leaves home — current NC Wildlife Resources Commission registration (or your home state's, if you're not staying long enough to need NC numbers) and insurance are on you, not the cottage.
