Avon and Buxton sit about 10 miles apart — 15 to 20 minutes on NC-12. Neither choice locks you out of anything. But they feel different, and one of them probably fits your trip better.

If you're fishing the Point at dawn every day, staying in Buxton saves you 40 minutes of round-trip driving daily. That's the strongest single argument for either village, and it's Buxton's.
Buxton's beach near the lighthouse is the only seasonally guarded beach on Hatteras Island, staffed Memorial Day through Labor Day. With nervous swimmers or small children, that's a real consideration. (Note: no dogs there in summer.)
It's in the village. Grounds open 24 hours, and you can walk or bike rather than drive.
Buxton Woods is a 1,000-acre maritime forest — shade, trails, and a genuinely different landscape from the open dunes. Avon has nothing like it.
Avon is the island's midpoint. The Tri-Villages, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village are all within 15 to 40 minutes. From Buxton, everything north is 15 minutes further.
Around 16 places to eat, the only chain grocery with a pharmacy, hardware, tackle and coffee. On a rainy Tuesday with a full house, that matters more than it sounds. The full list.
Canadian Hole and Kite Point are minutes south of Avon — the best-known kiteboarding and windsurfing water on the East Coast.
The Avon Pier is the only fishing pier within the national seashore. Fish deep water without a boat, no individual license needed.

If one specific thing is the point of your trip — Cape Point, the lighthouse, a guarded beach — stay next to it. Usually that means Buxton.
If your trip is "a week at the beach with some of everything" — that's Avon. Central, best-served, least driving.
And genuinely: ten miles is nothing. Whichever you choose, you'll see the other one.
We have a canal-front cottage here — two bedrooms, sleeps 8, private dock and kayaks, beach a short walk away.
See the HouseStay in Avon if you want the most services and the least driving — it has the island's only chain grocery, a pier, tackle and hardware shops, and the most restaurants, and it is central to the whole island. Stay in Buxton if your trip is built around Cape Point fishing or the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, or if you want the island's only lifeguarded beach. Buxton is closer to those specific things; Avon is closer to everything in general.
Both work, with different strengths. Buxton has the island's only seasonally lifeguarded beach, near the lighthouse, which matters with young swimmers — though dogs are not allowed on that beach in summer. Avon has more restaurants, the grocery store, and shorter drives to most activities. Frisco, just south of Buxton, has the gentlest surf of the three.
About 10 miles, or 15 to 20 minutes along NC Highway 12. Staying in one does not rule out the other — plenty of visitors base in Avon and drive to Buxton daily, or vice versa.
Avon has more services and dining; Buxton has more headline attractions. Buxton holds the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Cape Point, Buxton Woods maritime forest and the guarded beach. Avon holds the grocery, most of the restaurants, the Avon Pier and the closest access to Canadian Hole for wind sports.
